What to Expect

The slightly larger Tsavo East is generally flat, with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. Other features include the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls.

Tsavo East is the largest protected area in Kenya, a land of unparalleled biodiversity and naturally home to Africa’s “Big Five” – black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, and of course, lion.

But on your game drives here you can also come upon eland, gerenuk, impala and Masai giraffe. And the birds! Over 500 species like the black kite, lovebird and sacred ibis await your discovery.

Here, too, the land calls out to be explored. You can traverse the Yatta Plateau, at 300 kilometers, the world’s longest lava flow.

And it’s not all rugged plains that meet the eye – the Galana River flowing through the park creates a lush line of greenery cutting across the dusty Savannah. You’ll find pods of hippos, crocodile and waterbuck adding to the diversity in this unpredictable reserve.

From the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water gushing out of from the under parched lava rock that is the Mzima Springs  to the Shetani  lava flows, Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged wilderness. The savannah ecosystem comprises of open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges including the Poacher’s Lookout where visitors can see the teeming herds in the plains below. Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world and attractions include elephant, rhino, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species including the threatened corncrake and near threatened Basra Reed Warbler.

Amboseli National Park is undisputedly one of the most scenic national parks in Kenya. It is not only home to the Big Five, but also a rich playfield of diverse wildlife and vegetation ranging from antelopes, monkeys, hyenas, giraffes, crocodiles, peacocks and ostriches. Its vast landscape offers scenic hills and swamps in the stretch of 8, 000 square kilometers of land cover.

  • Huge herds of Elephants covered in red dust from wallowing and dust bathing
  • Mudanda Rock – this rock towers above a natural dam which draws many Elephants to slake their thirst every day.
  • Lugards Falls – these falls occur on the Galana River, passing over some interestingly shaped rocks.
  • Mzima Springs
  • The Rhino Sanctuary
  • The towering Mt. Kilimanjaro

This vast savanna National Park lies in low, semi-arid land at the eastern edge of the inland plateau, north of the main Mombasa-Nairobi road and railway. Tsavo National Park was originally established in 1948, but in 1949 it was separated into Tsavo West and Tsavo East for administrative purposes. Tsavo East National Park is located over four districts; Kitui, Taita Taveta, Tana River, and a small portion in Makueni. Tsavo East covers 11,741 Km2. Tsavo West National Park is wooded savanna stretching from the Athi River, north of the Mombasa-Nairobi road, south to the Tanzanian border. The north-eastern boundary along the Athi adjoins Tsavo East National Park. Tsavo West is located within Taita Taveta district, and borders with Makueni and Kajiado districts. It was gazetted as Kenya's second national park. It covers an area of about 9,065 square kilometers. Amboseli National Park is in southern Kenya. It’s known for its large elephant herds and views of immense Mount Kilimanjaro, across the border in Tanzania. Observation Hill offers panoramas of the peak and the park’s plains and swamps.

Jambo guys.. thanks again for a fabulous time. Second trip with TANIUS and equally as good as the previous one.

A huge thanks to Bedan who made our trip so enjoyable. His eagle eyes always on the lookout- with plenty of water about the animals were elusive but Bedan worked hard to please us. The elephants at the waterholes were amazing to watch. From eagles to wild dogs, chameleon to mongoose, leopard to tortoise as well as all the usual big game – fantastic photo opportunities.
Asante Sana Bedan. We will be back !
