Tsavo East Features

The slightly larger Tsavo East is generally flat, with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. Other features include the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls.

Tsavo East is the largest protected area in Kenya, a land of unparalleled biodiversity and naturally home to Africa’s “Big Five” – black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, and of course, lion.

But on your game drives here you can also come upon eland, gerenuk, impala and Masai giraffe. And the birds! Over 500 species like the black kite, lovebird and sacred ibis await your discovery.

Here, too, the land calls out to be explored. You can traverse the Yatta Plateau, at 300 kilometers, the world’s longest lava flow.

And it’s not all rugged plains that meet the eye – the Galana River flowing through the park creates a lush line of greenery cutting across the dusty Savannah. You’ll find pods of hippos, crocodile and waterbuck adding to the diversity in this unpredictable reserve.

From the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water gushing out of from the under parched lava rock that is the Mzima Springs  to the Shetani  lava flows, Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged wilderness. The savannah ecosystem comprises of open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges including the Poacher’s Lookout where visitors can see the teeming herds in the plains below. Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world and attractions include elephant, rhino, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species including the threatened corncrake and near threatened Basra Reed Warbler.

  • Huge herds of Elephants covered in red dust from wallowing and dust bathing
  • Mudanda Rock – this rock towers above a natural dam which draws many Elephants to slake their thirst every day.
  • Lugards Falls – these falls occur on the Galana River, passing over some interestingly shaped rocks.
  • Mzima Springs
  • The Rhino Sanctuary

Just returned from Kenya and wanted to say a huge thank you for the safari we booked with you.

Bedan was a most valuable and accommodating guide, his knowledge was good and we very much enjoyed being with him for the three days.

Ashnil Aruba was amazing and the food here is quite the best we had in Kenya, Ngulia however really need to improve, the setting and the animals are incredible, the accommodation and the food are both absolutely terrible. Our shower didn’t work and things were falling apart, for the staff everything seemed too much trouble and the general atmosphere was not good. We just thought you ought to know about Ngulia, but as i say Bedan and the animals more than made up for any negative thoughts we may have.

    So thank you again.

Myself and family did a 3-day Tsavo East and West, we had Francis as our guide, he was excellent at spotting and full of information about all the animals.

We saw the big five although seeing the rhino was through a telescope!

The rest of our party did a 2 day safari but they missed out on seeing the lions. So i highly recommend the 3 day its worth the extra money. 🙂

We were on safari at the mid of November and we chose the three day Tsavo East & West tour.

Everything about it was fantastic, Peter was our driver and he knew loads about the animals and the nature and was really friendly and funny. He was accompanied by George who was also really nice & informative.

We saw loads of animals and they were both really keen to make the most of our time out and about and were happy to stop and wait etc while we took in the scenery and wildlife.

Both lodges were amazing with great views, service and food. We spent two weeks in Kenya and the safari has to be the highlight. We would recommend using TANIUS to anyone and will be coming back to do another one!

We also did the one day crocodile safari which was a great day out!

    Thanks TANIUS

Couple of tips – try and take small denomination notes for tips and make sure you have binoculars.
